Is your website Manually Penalized by Google?

Google will tell if your Website has been Manually Penalized

If your website’s position in Google for a particular search query has suddenly dropped from the first page to, say, the fifth page of Google search results, chances are that your site has been manually penalized – maybe you did something that is not in accordance with Google’s webmaster guidelines.Earlier, it was almost impossible to diagnose the reason for a Google penalty and website owners could only guess whether their site was affected for violating guidelines or because of other factors beyond their control – maybe another site had better content and that could have pushed your site down in Google without you doing anything “black hat.”Well I hope none of us would ever need to use this but in case your site gets penalized in future, you can always ask Google through a reconsideration request and they may offer you an hint for debugging in the right direction.
The Search Quality Team writes on the Webmaster blog:Now, if your site is affected by a manual spam action, we may let you know if we were able to revoke that manual action based on your reconsideration request. Or, we could tell you if your site is still in violation of our guidelines. If your site is not actually affected by any manual action, we may let you know that as wellIf your site has been manually penalized in Google for violating guidelines, you need to file a reconsideration request and wait until they revoke the penalty. If the site is not ranking due to a bug in Google algorithms, or because of access issues (like your server is down), they’ll let you know that as well. Here’s one of the older videos from Google that talks in detail about reconsideration requests – the Webmaster tools UI though may have changed in these years.

Crossing continents over birds..!

Snails rode over birds to cross continents?
Like humans use aeroplanes for flying, snails may have ridden over shorebirds or stuck to their legs to cross Central America twice in the past million years, said scientists."Just as people use airplanes to fly overseas, marine snails may have used birds to fly over land," said Mark Torchin, a staff scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The idea goes back to Charles Darwin, who speculated that migratory birds could transport snails to distant places.
Sometimes such events trigger devastating biological invasions -- introducing new diseases, wiping out resident species or causing economic damage to food crops, according to a Smithsonian statement."There's also a big difference between one or two individuals ending up in a new place, and a really successful invasion, in which several animals survive, reproduce and establish new populations," added Torchin, the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society: B reports.\

"Not only snails, but many...organisms may be able to 'fly' with birds," said study co-author Osamu Miura, assistant professor at Japan's Kochi University and former post-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institute. In 1940, George Gaylord Simpson, who studied natural history recorded in fossils, coined the term "sweepstakes dispersal" to describe the unlikely events in which animals cross over a barrier resulting in major consequences for diversity of life.

About Anna Hazare, Jan Lok Pal Bill

‎10 things to know about Anna Hazare 'n Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !

1. Who is Anna Hazare?

An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?

This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bil, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

10. Ok, got it. What can I do?

At least we can spread the message. How?

Putting status message, links, video, changing profile pics.

Thanks for reading.

At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.

At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.

At least we can pray for his good health.

Fears misuse of UID numbers

Fears misuse of UID numbers
The Aadhaar Number, or the Unique Identification Card (UID) that will create a database for 1.2 billion people in India, may go out of hand, leading cybersecurity expert R. Bhaskar says.

"The facility is ambitious and is sure to make functioning easy from the governance perspective. But at the moment, it is not clear how the government's plan for UID will work out," Bhaskar told IANS.

"There is some kind of certification or guarantee needed from companies that are pooling the database or will be handling it," he said on the sidelines of a seminar on cyberspace and democracy at the India International Centre here.UIDs, the UPA government's flagship programme chaired by Nandan Nilekani, seeks to accord each Indian a unique identification number. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the nodal agency which has appointed registrars across the country to facilitate the enrolment process. Registrars, typically government departments and public sector organisations, have in turn appointed the agency to collect data.

Over 200 such agencies, including Wipro, Comat Technologies, Alankit and Virgo Softech, are involved in enrollment and will issue a 12-digit number.Within the proposed process, it is to be delivered in 20-30 days at the person's address by speed post, after verification of biometrics and demographic data. Data verification is done by the authority under a centralised system.

"The immediate threat may not be realised now. But in a span of next five years, when the cards will be rolled out completely, we may also witness cases of cyber mischief such as hacking," Bhaskar said.

He further warned that cybermischief may also evolve into cybercrime that poses serious threat to country's national security.

While the UID guarantees uniqueness and a universal identity through a centralised online identity verification process, experts point out that biometric information such as iris scan and fingerprinting lead to a misuse of an individual's personal information.Experts have also raised concerns on the number getting misused by anti-socials such as terrorists, since they can get it issued through fake identities during large-scale enrolments.

"If the key to the database is owned by non-sovereign entities, then we really need certification and stronger laws that sort the issue of licensing of the UIDs," Bhaskar concluded.

The UID cards are expected to ease the administrative pathway for citizens, as one card will serve all purposes related with identification.Currently, on average, 150,000 enrolments are done each day. The number of enrolments is expected to reach six million per day by October. The task, therefore, is daunting, since the latest data places the country's population at 1.21 billion.

UFO found on seabed

UFO found on seabed
Sonar scans looking for a century-old wreck of a Swedish merchant ship have revealed a grainy outline of a saucer shape against the dirt in the Gulf of Bothnia -- hinting of a crashed UFO on the ocean floor. The mysterious shape found at a depth of roughly 100 metres, between Sweden and Finland, makes scientists certain about one thing -- that our planet has been visited by extraterrestrials. The ocean exploration team which found it suggests that the mud around the craft has been scarred, suggesting it has tried to move around, the Daily Mail reports.

Swedish explorer Peter Lindberg was looking for remains of sunken Swedish ships laden with cargo such as wines and champagne when he chanced upon the UFO. Some have even suggested it resembles the Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars series, with its distinctive front forks and round shape. Lindberg said it was large and about 60 feet across and clearly visible. "You see a lot of weird stuff in this job, but during my 18 years as a professional I have never seen anything like this," he said.

Spacecraft to jupiter by NASA

NASA to probe Jupiter’s stormy clouds

NASA will launch a spacecraft Friday to unravel the secrets of Jupiter, the largest planet in the universe.
Temperatures on Jupiter drop to minus 234 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 145 degrees Celsius, thick brooding clouds obscure its atmosphere and winds rage at a peak of 384 miles per hour, or 618 km an hour.

The spacecraft, named Juno after the ancient Roman goddess, will explore what drives the violent weather on Jupiter and what lies beneath its stormy clouds. The $1.1 billion probe will peer through the planet - 1,321 times as big as earth - and find out what lies under its atmosphere. Juno will begin its 1,740 million-mile journey after launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, US, the Telegraph reports.

Hovering 3,100 miles above Jupiter's multihued clouds, the 66-foot wide Juno probe will spend a year looking deep inside the giant gas planet. Scott Bolton, NASA mission's principal investigator, said: "What we are trying to do is discover the recipe for planet formation. We are looking at the ingredient list and what is at the core of the planet."

Juno is carrying a suite of eight instruments to help it reveal clues about how Jupiter formed and evolved.

parents spy on kids on Facebook

Parents spy on kids on Facebook

Over half of parents log on to social networking websites only to find out what their children are upto, a study has found.About 55 per cent of mothers and fathers in Britain thought nothing of snooping around on their children's profiles to see what they are doing, the Daily Mail reported.

Conducted by computing company Bullguard Internet Security, the study revealed that parents did it to avoid having "awkward conversations" with children. But nearly a quarter admitted it was the only way they could find out about their kids' lives. The figures indicate parents were turning increasingly crafty to keep tabs on their children in the digital age.

Almost one in 20 mothers and fathers even log on with a friend's account to avoid detection and gain better access to their children's profiles.Websites like Facebook and MySpace along with microblogging site Twitter have become quite popular among children and youngsters. The study also revealed that while 55 per cent of parents said they did spy on their children, 40 per cent said they did not.

But the rest five per cent said they would do so if they knew how.Around 41 per cent said they monitor their children's status updates and 39 per cent look at their "Wall", which is where they and friends write messages.Just under one third - 29 per cent - took a look at pictures their children had.

Dogs replaced by Computers

Dogs place in life replaced by Computers

Personal computers are fast taking over the place of human beings' long time best friend, the family dog, a British study has found.

Researchers have found just six per cent of us believe that "most people rely more on their dog than they do on their PC," while 67 per cent think the opposite to be true.

Even 38 per cent of dog owners confessed to relying more on their PC than on their dog, although 36 per cent disagreed. And 71 per cent of 18 to 24-year-old dog owners said they relied more on their computer, Daily Mail reported.

According to Paul Allen, editor of Computeractive magazine, which carried out the poll with the Royal Society For The Protection Of Cruelty to Animals, said: "These days you can even take your PC for a walk, provided you have a laptop or tablet.

"It's only a matter of time until the first PC that fetches your slippers."

Researchers talked to 2,000 British adults to find out about the change modern technology has brought to their home life. They found that male dog owners are almost twice as likely as female owners to rely on their computer than a canine companion.

Allen said: "With broadband bringing them global news and newspaper sales falling, the family dog even misses out on the pleasure of taking the paper to his owner."

But it's not all bad news for obedient dogs.

"The family PC has given dog owners access to a wealth of resources and information that can help with the long-term care that a dog needs," Allen said.

"From finding the best vets to researching great new walks that all the family can enjoy, the web enables the PC to become a dog's best friend."

ISS to be sunk in Pacific

ISS to be sunk in Pacific after 2020

Built with great difficulty and labour, the International Space Station (ISS) will be de-orbited and sunk in the Pacific Ocean after 2020 like its Russian predecessor Mir, a top Russian official said Wednesday.

Russian space agency Roscosmos deputy head Vitaly Davydov said: "We will be forced to sink the ISS. We cannot leave it in orbit as it is a very complicated and a heavy object. There must be no space waste from it."

"We have agreed with our partners that the ISS would function roughly until 2020," he added.

The space station's life was initially estimated at 15 years.

The ISS has been functioning for 13 years now after receiving numerous international space expeditions.

Asked whether a new space station will be built, Davydov said: "There are several possibilities".

The Mir space station was in operation from 1983 to 1998 before it was sunk in the Pacific in a "spacecraft cemetery" near Christmas Island in 2000.

The agreement to construct the ISS was signed Jan 29, 1998, in Washington by representatives from Canada, 11 members of the European Space Agency - that included Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Britain - alongwith Japan, Russia and the US.

The ISS was launched Nov 20, 1998.

Facebook vs Google : Google takes an Edge

Anonymous To FBI

Anonymous & Lulz Security Statement

  1. Hello thar FBI and international law authorities,
  2.
  3. We recently stumbled across the following article with amazement and a certain amount of amusement:
  4.
  5. http://www.npr.org/2011/07/20/138555799/fbi-arrests-alleged-anonymous-hackers
  6.
  7. The statements made by deputy assistant FBI director Steve Chabinsky in this
  8. article clearly seem to be directed at Anonymous and Lulz Security, and we are
  9. happy to provide you with a response.
  10.
  11. You state:
  12.
  13.   "We want to send a message that chaos on the Internet is unacceptable,
  14.   [even if] hackers can be believed to have social causes, it's entirely
  15.   unacceptable to break into websites and commit unlawful acts."
  16.
  17. Now let us be clear here, Mr. Chabinsky, while we understand that you and
  18. your colleagues may find breaking into websites unacceptable, let us tell
  19. you what WE find unacceptable:
  20.
  21.  * Governments lying to their citizens and inducing fear and terror to keep
  22.    them in control by dismantling their freedom piece by piece.
  23.
  24.  * Corporations aiding and conspiring with said governments while taking
  25.    advantage at the same time by collecting billions of funds for
  26.    federal contracts we all know they can't fulfil.
  27.
  28.  * Lobby conglomerates who only follow their agenda to push the profits
  29.    higher, while at the same time being deeply involved in governments around
  30.    the world with the only goal to infiltrate and corrupt them enough
  31.    so the status quo will never change.
  32.
  33. These governments and corporations are our enemy. And we will continue to
  34. fight them, with all methods we have at our disposal, and that certainly
  35. includes breaking into their websites and exposing their lies.
  36.
  37. We are not scared any more. Your threats to arrest us are meaningless to
  38. us as you cannot arrest an idea. Any attempt to do so will make your
  39. citizens more angry until they will roar in one gigantic choir. It is our
  40. mission to help these people and there is nothing - absolutely nothing - you
  41. can possibly to do make us stop.
  42.
  43.   "The Internet has become so important to so many people that we have to
  44.   ensure that the World Wide Web does not become the Wild Wild West."
  45.
  46. Let me ask you, good sir, when was the Internet not the Wild Wild West? Do
  47. you really believe you were in control of it at any point? You were not.
  48.
  49. That does not mean that everyone behaves like an outlaw. You see, most
  50. people do not behave like bandits if they have no reason to. We become bandits
  51. on the Internet because you have forced our hand. The Anonymous bitchslap rings
  52. through your ears like hacktivism movements of the 90s. We're back - and we're
  53. not going anywhere. Expect us.

20 million Google+ users

20 million Google+  users in 3 weeks

When Google Inc. launched its Google+ social-networking site three weeks ago, executives handed out sailor hats to the hundreds of employees working on the project, symbolizing their year-long journey to that point.
So far, the sailing has been mostly smooth. On Wednesday, Web-traffic watcher comScore Inc. estimated Google+ has had 20 million unique visitors since its launch, including five million visitors from the U.S. A Google spokeswoman declined comment.

ComScore, whose estimates are based on a "global measurement panel" of two million Internet users, similar to the approach Nielsen uses to measure television ratings, doesn't have data on the number of minutes people spent on Google+.
Still, the growth of Google+ has impressed observers because access to it is by invitation only, meaning people can join only if a current member invites them. And the company hasn't yet marketed the service to the more than one billion monthly visitors who use its search engine, Gmail and other services.

Google+ lets people share comments, articles, photos and videos with various "circles" of friends or contacts, or they can share content publicly with any userwho wants to view their posts. Eventually, Google plans to incorporate features of Google+ in its other services, such as its YouTube video site.
"I've never seen anything grow this quickly," said Andrew Lipsman, vice president of industry analysis at comScore. The only other site that has accumulated as many new visitors in a short period of time is Twitter in 2009, he said, "but that happened over several months."

Parking app a big hit

Australian teen’s parking app a big hit

An Australian teenager's iPhone app that helps users remember where they parked their car and lets them know when their parking time was running out has become a huge hit.

Brandon Cowan, 17, a student at Masada College in Sydney's North Shore, developed the iParkedHere iPhone app with friend Hilton Rosenfeld, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

He said the $2.49 app was the number 1 top-grossing app in the Lifestyle category on the iTunes app store.

"At the moment we are keeping the money in the company but I will probably be saving it for a house when I'm older," Cowan was quoted as saying.

Brandon said that their company, Crazy Dog Apps, last week signed an agreement with an gaming firm to develop an app for it.

They have also made a basic prototype of an app to prepare shopping lists.

Brandon is now having second thoughts on attending university.

He said: "I'm not 100 per cent sure what I want to do after school but probably something to do with what I am doing now."

Google high-speed lines

Google chooses Kansas City for experimental high-speed lines
Google has chosen Kansas City, Kansas as the location for its experimental citywide high-speed internet project, bringing broadband at 1GB a second - 100 times faster than the typical US internet connection, the company announced Wednesday.

Google announced plans for the experimental fibre optic last year, prompting a flood of interest from more than 1,000 localities keen to be on the cutting edge of US networks.

Google said it chose the city of 143,000 because it was a location "where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations".

The internet search giant network has said it is embarking on the project as a way to discover how ultra-fast speeds will change the use of the internet. Though the company is not expected to become an Internet Service Provider it is "looking closely at ways to bring ultra-high speed internet to other cities across the country," the company said.

Tracking health trends through Twitter

Tracking health trends through Twitter

Twitter allows millions of social media fans to comment in 140 characters or less on just about anything - from an actor's outlandish behaviour to an earthquake's tragic toll. But by sifting through this busy flood of banter, is it possible to also track important public health trends?

Two Johns Hopkins University computer scientists would respond with a one-word tweet: "Yes!"

Mark Dredze and Michael J. Paul fed two billion public tweets posted between May 2009 and October 2010 into computers, and then used software to filter out the 1.5 million messages that referred to health matters.

Identities of the tweeters were not collected by Dredze, assistant research professor of computer science, and Paul, a doctoral student, according to a Hopkins statement.

"Our goal was to find out whether Twitter posts could be a useful source of public health information," Dredze said.

"We determined that indeed, they could. In some cases, we probably learned some things that even the tweeters' doctors were not aware of, like which over-the-counter medicines the posters were using to treat their symptoms at home," he added.

By sorting these health-related tweets into electronic "piles", Dredze and Paul uncovered intriguing patterns about allergies, flu cases, insomnia, cancer, obesity, depression, pain and other ailments.

"When we started, I didn't even know if people talked about allergies on Twitter," Paul said. "But we found out that they do."

Besides finding a range of health ailments, researchers were able to record many of the medications that ill tweeters consumed, thanks to posts such as: "Had to pop a Benadryl...allergies are the worst."

Other tweets pointed to misuse of medicine. "We found that some people tweeted that they were taking antibiotics for the flu," Paul said.

"But antibiotics don't work on the flu, which is a virus, and this practice could contribute to the growing antibiotic resistance problems. So these tweets showed us that some serious medical misperceptions exist out there," he added.

.xxx online now

.xxx online now

Pornography-only suffix - .xxx - is now part of the Domain Name System (DNS) and the first addresses like porn.xxx, sex.xxx and xxx.xxx are being used to promote its sale, it was reported here.

Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday that following approval from ICANN, a US quango, the pornography-only suffix has been added to DNS, which have .com, .gov, .net and .uk, among others.

The pornography-only suffix was proposed in 2000 and approved five years later by ICANN. It was, however, blocked by the then Bush administration as the US government holds sway over ICANN.

The media report said that the firm behind .xxx, ICM Registry, sued and forced the regulator to re-approve its plans.

The new suffix - .xxx - was created through changes to the Domain Name System made Friday.

Once high-value keywords have been auctioned, .xxx addresses are likely to cost around $70.

The Free Speech Coalition, a trade organisation, has claimed that it will make it easier for governments to block access to pornography websites. It has asked pornographers to boycott .xxx.

India and Saudi Arabia have said they want to block all the new addresses.

ICM Registry said that .xxx "will be a professionally run outfit" and it will give users "greater confidence and certainty".

"For individuals or families wishing to avoid adult content, the machine-readable labels will allow easy and reliable filtering. No need to fiddle with keywords or expensive software," it was quoted as saying.

Microsoft certified pilot

Microsoft certified pilot-Bust stress, conquer sky,the virtual way

Vaibhava Srinivasan, 33, was flying a Boeing 737 aircraft over the picturesque Himalayan mountain range on his way to China, when he had to suddenly cut short his sortie for an urgent board meeting at office.

No, he wasn't daydreaming.

On weekdays, the Bangalorean works as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, but on weekends, he brings out the aviator in him and 'flies' all kinds of jetliners all over the world with the help of a software -- Microsoft Flight Simulator. The software, priced at $40 (Rs.1,700), commands the lion's share in the virtual flying software market.

"This software is for enthusiasts and has been constantly upgraded over the years. It provides you a virtual experience of flying a jet and is easily available at any electronic gadget or video game shop," Srinivasan told IANS over phone.

Srinivasan, in fact, went one step further by installing a Boeing 737 cockpit at his home with hardware and software procured from various countries over a period of two years. The cockpit boasts of an imitation panel, yoke, throttle quadrant, multi-functional displays, auto-pilot and auto throttle panels and original captain seats.

"After slugging the whole week I need an effective stress-buster on weekends to relax and the simulator is just the perfect solution. In fact, many of my friends often visit my place just to lay their hands on it," he quipped.

Srinivasan may be an extreme case, but budding aviators can also consider software like X-Plane, which costs around $25-40, depending on the features one opts for.

Siddharth Chowdhri, who owns The English Book Store in central Delhi's upscale commercial complex Connaught Place, says flight simulator software and hardware like yoke and throttle quadrant are some of the best selling items of his shop.

"Over the years, our clientele has changed. Earlier, most of our customers of such software were students training to become pilots, but now enthusiasts have also started thronging our shop," he told IANS.

"Many of the stuff are directly imported from the UK and US," he added.

Virtual flying enthusiasts also have another option -- the International Virtual Aviation Organisation (IVAO), the biggest non-profit community of virtual flyers and air traffic controllers, based in Belgium.

"IVAO provides a platform for virtual pilots and air traffic controllers from across the globe with real time data on weather and traffic conditions of the destination that you are headed towards," said Srinivasan, who is also IVAO's director of public relations.

After a free registration at IVAO, one can download software for pilots or air traffic controllers and get started immediately.

Agreed Sanket Deshpande, a media professional from Mumbai, who termed the experience as "out of this world."

"Once you start flying, it's difficult to believe that it is just a simulation. The most amazing thing is that you can interact with fellow pilots who are flying with you in the virtual airspace," the 26-year-old told IANS.

Delegated with the responsibility of coordinating operations of air traffic control and new members joining IVAO, Deshpande said 25-30 enthusiasts are joining them every month.

"The age group usually wavers between 16 and 45. We also have retired air force pilots as our members," said Deshpande, who is in the process of building a cockpit at home.

Another online virtual flying network is the US-based Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network (VATSIM)

"Although both the organisations are equally large, VATSIM has more American users whereas IVEO boasts of more Europeans and Indians," said Srinivasan.

Some also say the flight simulators can be the first step towards a career as a pilot or an air traffic controller.

"The problem in India is that parents think that it is just another video game and discourage their kids from using it, whereas it can very well be a beginning for a kid to shape his career as a pilot," Hyderabad-based Ajit Menon, a sales manager with Dell, told IANS.

"Although it's a rage in the West, it is growing at an equally healthy rate here," added Menon, 40, who claims to have more than 2,000 hours of virtual flying under his belt.

Menon's views were corroborated by 32-year-old Rohit Dalaya, a captain with Air India, who admits that it was his hours spent flying virtually which egged him on to realise his dream of becoming a pilot.

"I started using the flight simulator in my college days way back in 1996. Although I did my training from the US, the simulator played a major role in helping me achieve my goal," said Dalaya, who has been flying with the national carrier for more than 10 years.

Power your mobile from Air energy

Power your mobile from Air energy

A revolutionary new device would only need air to keep your mobile phones, wireless sensors and communication chips going.

These 'energy scavenging' devices could even be stored in places like shoes and can be operated by themselves or with other generating technologies.

Said Manos Tentzeris, professor at the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering: "There is a large amount of electromagnetic energy all around us but nobody has been able to tap into it," the Daily Mail reports.

If a battery or a solar-collector or battery package failed completely, scavenged energy could allow the system to transmit a wireless distress signal while also maintaining critical functionalities, according to a Georgia Tech statement.

Tentzeris and his team have used inkjet printers to combine sensors, antennas and energy scavenging capabilities on paper or flexible polymers.

So far, the energy captured is minute - measured in microwatts and milliwatts, not megawatts - but is able to gather enough juice to power small sensors and RFID tags.

For example, the researchers last week said they had managed to gather enough energy from a TV station half a km away to power a small temperature sensor.

Mobile handsets manufacturer HTC Corp Thursday launched its smartphone HTC Sensation in the Indian market and said it will launch its HTC Flyer tablets in a couple of weeks.

"HTC Sensation is an exceptional smartphone that will win customers with its unique blend of functionality, usability and style. It will create a paradigm shift in the overall smartphone category with a brilliant experience," said Lennard Hoornik, president for south Asia, HTC.

The smartphone is priced Rs.32,700.

"HTC Flyer will be launched shortly, in the next couple of weeks," he added.

The company emphasised that India was a big market for HTC but denied to divulge its sales target here.

"India is a huge market. We want to be a leading player here and we have high sales target here," added Hoornik.

Based on Android 2.3 platform, Sensation is HTC's first phone to feature a 1.2 GHz processor supplied by Qualcomm and HTC Sense 3.0 user interface.
