Dogs replaced by Computers

Dogs place in life replaced by Computers

Personal computers are fast taking over the place of human beings' long time best friend, the family dog, a British study has found.

Researchers have found just six per cent of us believe that "most people rely more on their dog than they do on their PC," while 67 per cent think the opposite to be true.

Even 38 per cent of dog owners confessed to relying more on their PC than on their dog, although 36 per cent disagreed. And 71 per cent of 18 to 24-year-old dog owners said they relied more on their computer, Daily Mail reported.

According to Paul Allen, editor of Computeractive magazine, which carried out the poll with the Royal Society For The Protection Of Cruelty to Animals, said: "These days you can even take your PC for a walk, provided you have a laptop or tablet.

"It's only a matter of time until the first PC that fetches your slippers."

Researchers talked to 2,000 British adults to find out about the change modern technology has brought to their home life. They found that male dog owners are almost twice as likely as female owners to rely on their computer than a canine companion.

Allen said: "With broadband bringing them global news and newspaper sales falling, the family dog even misses out on the pleasure of taking the paper to his owner."

But it's not all bad news for obedient dogs.

"The family PC has given dog owners access to a wealth of resources and information that can help with the long-term care that a dog needs," Allen said.

"From finding the best vets to researching great new walks that all the family can enjoy, the web enables the PC to become a dog's best friend."

ISS to be sunk in Pacific after 2020

Built with great difficulty and labour, the International Space Station (ISS) will be de-orbited and sunk in the Pacific Ocean after 2020 like its Russian predecessor Mir, a top Russian official said Wednesday.

Russian space agency Roscosmos deputy head Vitaly Davydov said: "We will be forced to sink the ISS. We cannot leave it in orbit as it is a very complicated and a heavy object. There must be no space waste from it."

"We have agreed with our partners that the ISS would function roughly until 2020," he added.

The space station's life was initially estimated at 15 years.

The ISS has been functioning for 13 years now after receiving numerous international space expeditions.

Asked whether a new space station will be built, Davydov said: "There are several possibilities".

The Mir space station was in operation from 1983 to 1998 before it was sunk in the Pacific in a "spacecraft cemetery" near Christmas Island in 2000.

The agreement to construct the ISS was signed Jan 29, 1998, in Washington by representatives from Canada, 11 members of the European Space Agency - that included Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Britain - alongwith Japan, Russia and the US.

The ISS was launched Nov 20, 1998.

Anonymous To FBI

Anonymous & Lulz Security Statement

  1. Hello thar FBI and international law authorities,
  2.
  3. We recently stumbled across the following article with amazement and a certain amount of amusement:
  4.
  5. http://www.npr.org/2011/07/20/138555799/fbi-arrests-alleged-anonymous-hackers
  6.
  7. The statements made by deputy assistant FBI director Steve Chabinsky in this
  8. article clearly seem to be directed at Anonymous and Lulz Security, and we are
  9. happy to provide you with a response.
  10.
  11. You state:
  12.
  13.   "We want to send a message that chaos on the Internet is unacceptable,
  14.   [even if] hackers can be believed to have social causes, it's entirely
  15.   unacceptable to break into websites and commit unlawful acts."
  16.
  17. Now let us be clear here, Mr. Chabinsky, while we understand that you and
  18. your colleagues may find breaking into websites unacceptable, let us tell
  19. you what WE find unacceptable:
  20.
  21.  * Governments lying to their citizens and inducing fear and terror to keep
  22.    them in control by dismantling their freedom piece by piece.
  23.
  24.  * Corporations aiding and conspiring with said governments while taking
  25.    advantage at the same time by collecting billions of funds for
  26.    federal contracts we all know they can't fulfil.
  27.
  28.  * Lobby conglomerates who only follow their agenda to push the profits
  29.    higher, while at the same time being deeply involved in governments around
  30.    the world with the only goal to infiltrate and corrupt them enough
  31.    so the status quo will never change.
  32.
  33. These governments and corporations are our enemy. And we will continue to
  34. fight them, with all methods we have at our disposal, and that certainly
  35. includes breaking into their websites and exposing their lies.
  36.
  37. We are not scared any more. Your threats to arrest us are meaningless to
  38. us as you cannot arrest an idea. Any attempt to do so will make your
  39. citizens more angry until they will roar in one gigantic choir. It is our
  40. mission to help these people and there is nothing - absolutely nothing - you
  41. can possibly to do make us stop.
  42.
  43.   "The Internet has become so important to so many people that we have to
  44.   ensure that the World Wide Web does not become the Wild Wild West."
  45.
  46. Let me ask you, good sir, when was the Internet not the Wild Wild West? Do
  47. you really believe you were in control of it at any point? You were not.
  48.
  49. That does not mean that everyone behaves like an outlaw. You see, most
  50. people do not behave like bandits if they have no reason to. We become bandits
  51. on the Internet because you have forced our hand. The Anonymous bitchslap rings
  52. through your ears like hacktivism movements of the 90s. We're back - and we're
  53. not going anywhere. Expect us.

20 million Google+ users

20 million Google+  users in 3 weeks

When Google Inc. launched its Google+ social-networking site three weeks ago, executives handed out sailor hats to the hundreds of employees working on the project, symbolizing their year-long journey to that point.
So far, the sailing has been mostly smooth. On Wednesday, Web-traffic watcher comScore Inc. estimated Google+ has had 20 million unique visitors since its launch, including five million visitors from the U.S. A Google spokeswoman declined comment.

ComScore, whose estimates are based on a "global measurement panel" of two million Internet users, similar to the approach Nielsen uses to measure television ratings, doesn't have data on the number of minutes people spent on Google+.
Still, the growth of Google+ has impressed observers because access to it is by invitation only, meaning people can join only if a current member invites them. And the company hasn't yet marketed the service to the more than one billion monthly visitors who use its search engine, Gmail and other services.

Google+ lets people share comments, articles, photos and videos with various "circles" of friends or contacts, or they can share content publicly with any userwho wants to view their posts. Eventually, Google plans to incorporate features of Google+ in its other services, such as its YouTube video site.
"I've never seen anything grow this quickly," said Andrew Lipsman, vice president of industry analysis at comScore. The only other site that has accumulated as many new visitors in a short period of time is Twitter in 2009, he said, "but that happened over several months."

Parking app a big hit

Australian teen’s parking app a big hit

An Australian teenager's iPhone app that helps users remember where they parked their car and lets them know when their parking time was running out has become a huge hit.

Brandon Cowan, 17, a student at Masada College in Sydney's North Shore, developed the iParkedHere iPhone app with friend Hilton Rosenfeld, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

He said the $2.49 app was the number 1 top-grossing app in the Lifestyle category on the iTunes app store.

"At the moment we are keeping the money in the company but I will probably be saving it for a house when I'm older," Cowan was quoted as saying.

Brandon said that their company, Crazy Dog Apps, last week signed an agreement with an gaming firm to develop an app for it.

They have also made a basic prototype of an app to prepare shopping lists.

Brandon is now having second thoughts on attending university.

He said: "I'm not 100 per cent sure what I want to do after school but probably something to do with what I am doing now."

Google high-speed lines

Google chooses Kansas City for experimental high-speed lines
Google has chosen Kansas City, Kansas as the location for its experimental citywide high-speed internet project, bringing broadband at 1GB a second - 100 times faster than the typical US internet connection, the company announced Wednesday.

Google announced plans for the experimental fibre optic last year, prompting a flood of interest from more than 1,000 localities keen to be on the cutting edge of US networks.

Google said it chose the city of 143,000 because it was a location "where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations".

The internet search giant network has said it is embarking on the project as a way to discover how ultra-fast speeds will change the use of the internet. Though the company is not expected to become an Internet Service Provider it is "looking closely at ways to bring ultra-high speed internet to other cities across the country," the company said.

Tracking health trends through Twitter

Tracking health trends through Twitter

Twitter allows millions of social media fans to comment in 140 characters or less on just about anything - from an actor's outlandish behaviour to an earthquake's tragic toll. But by sifting through this busy flood of banter, is it possible to also track important public health trends?

Two Johns Hopkins University computer scientists would respond with a one-word tweet: "Yes!"

Mark Dredze and Michael J. Paul fed two billion public tweets posted between May 2009 and October 2010 into computers, and then used software to filter out the 1.5 million messages that referred to health matters.

Identities of the tweeters were not collected by Dredze, assistant research professor of computer science, and Paul, a doctoral student, according to a Hopkins statement.

"Our goal was to find out whether Twitter posts could be a useful source of public health information," Dredze said.

"We determined that indeed, they could. In some cases, we probably learned some things that even the tweeters' doctors were not aware of, like which over-the-counter medicines the posters were using to treat their symptoms at home," he added.

By sorting these health-related tweets into electronic "piles", Dredze and Paul uncovered intriguing patterns about allergies, flu cases, insomnia, cancer, obesity, depression, pain and other ailments.

"When we started, I didn't even know if people talked about allergies on Twitter," Paul said. "But we found out that they do."

Besides finding a range of health ailments, researchers were able to record many of the medications that ill tweeters consumed, thanks to posts such as: "Had to pop a Benadryl...allergies are the worst."

Other tweets pointed to misuse of medicine. "We found that some people tweeted that they were taking antibiotics for the flu," Paul said.

"But antibiotics don't work on the flu, which is a virus, and this practice could contribute to the growing antibiotic resistance problems. So these tweets showed us that some serious medical misperceptions exist out there," he added.

.xxx online now

.xxx online now

Pornography-only suffix - .xxx - is now part of the Domain Name System (DNS) and the first addresses like porn.xxx, sex.xxx and xxx.xxx are being used to promote its sale, it was reported here.

Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday that following approval from ICANN, a US quango, the pornography-only suffix has been added to DNS, which have .com, .gov, .net and .uk, among others.

The pornography-only suffix was proposed in 2000 and approved five years later by ICANN. It was, however, blocked by the then Bush administration as the US government holds sway over ICANN.

The media report said that the firm behind .xxx, ICM Registry, sued and forced the regulator to re-approve its plans.

The new suffix - .xxx - was created through changes to the Domain Name System made Friday.

Once high-value keywords have been auctioned, .xxx addresses are likely to cost around $70.

The Free Speech Coalition, a trade organisation, has claimed that it will make it easier for governments to block access to pornography websites. It has asked pornographers to boycott .xxx.

India and Saudi Arabia have said they want to block all the new addresses.

ICM Registry said that .xxx "will be a professionally run outfit" and it will give users "greater confidence and certainty".

"For individuals or families wishing to avoid adult content, the machine-readable labels will allow easy and reliable filtering. No need to fiddle with keywords or expensive software," it was quoted as saying.

Microsoft certified pilot

Microsoft certified pilot-Bust stress, conquer sky,the virtual way

Vaibhava Srinivasan, 33, was flying a Boeing 737 aircraft over the picturesque Himalayan mountain range on his way to China, when he had to suddenly cut short his sortie for an urgent board meeting at office.

No, he wasn't daydreaming.

On weekdays, the Bangalorean works as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, but on weekends, he brings out the aviator in him and 'flies' all kinds of jetliners all over the world with the help of a software -- Microsoft Flight Simulator. The software, priced at $40 (Rs.1,700), commands the lion's share in the virtual flying software market.

"This software is for enthusiasts and has been constantly upgraded over the years. It provides you a virtual experience of flying a jet and is easily available at any electronic gadget or video game shop," Srinivasan told IANS over phone.

Srinivasan, in fact, went one step further by installing a Boeing 737 cockpit at his home with hardware and software procured from various countries over a period of two years. The cockpit boasts of an imitation panel, yoke, throttle quadrant, multi-functional displays, auto-pilot and auto throttle panels and original captain seats.

"After slugging the whole week I need an effective stress-buster on weekends to relax and the simulator is just the perfect solution. In fact, many of my friends often visit my place just to lay their hands on it," he quipped.

Srinivasan may be an extreme case, but budding aviators can also consider software like X-Plane, which costs around $25-40, depending on the features one opts for.

Siddharth Chowdhri, who owns The English Book Store in central Delhi's upscale commercial complex Connaught Place, says flight simulator software and hardware like yoke and throttle quadrant are some of the best selling items of his shop.

"Over the years, our clientele has changed. Earlier, most of our customers of such software were students training to become pilots, but now enthusiasts have also started thronging our shop," he told IANS.

"Many of the stuff are directly imported from the UK and US," he added.

Virtual flying enthusiasts also have another option -- the International Virtual Aviation Organisation (IVAO), the biggest non-profit community of virtual flyers and air traffic controllers, based in Belgium.

"IVAO provides a platform for virtual pilots and air traffic controllers from across the globe with real time data on weather and traffic conditions of the destination that you are headed towards," said Srinivasan, who is also IVAO's director of public relations.

After a free registration at IVAO, one can download software for pilots or air traffic controllers and get started immediately.

Agreed Sanket Deshpande, a media professional from Mumbai, who termed the experience as "out of this world."

"Once you start flying, it's difficult to believe that it is just a simulation. The most amazing thing is that you can interact with fellow pilots who are flying with you in the virtual airspace," the 26-year-old told IANS.

Delegated with the responsibility of coordinating operations of air traffic control and new members joining IVAO, Deshpande said 25-30 enthusiasts are joining them every month.

"The age group usually wavers between 16 and 45. We also have retired air force pilots as our members," said Deshpande, who is in the process of building a cockpit at home.

Another online virtual flying network is the US-based Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network (VATSIM)

"Although both the organisations are equally large, VATSIM has more American users whereas IVEO boasts of more Europeans and Indians," said Srinivasan.

Some also say the flight simulators can be the first step towards a career as a pilot or an air traffic controller.

"The problem in India is that parents think that it is just another video game and discourage their kids from using it, whereas it can very well be a beginning for a kid to shape his career as a pilot," Hyderabad-based Ajit Menon, a sales manager with Dell, told IANS.

"Although it's a rage in the West, it is growing at an equally healthy rate here," added Menon, 40, who claims to have more than 2,000 hours of virtual flying under his belt.

Menon's views were corroborated by 32-year-old Rohit Dalaya, a captain with Air India, who admits that it was his hours spent flying virtually which egged him on to realise his dream of becoming a pilot.

"I started using the flight simulator in my college days way back in 1996. Although I did my training from the US, the simulator played a major role in helping me achieve my goal," said Dalaya, who has been flying with the national carrier for more than 10 years.

Power your mobile from Air energy

Power your mobile from Air energy

A revolutionary new device would only need air to keep your mobile phones, wireless sensors and communication chips going.

These 'energy scavenging' devices could even be stored in places like shoes and can be operated by themselves or with other generating technologies.

Said Manos Tentzeris, professor at the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering: "There is a large amount of electromagnetic energy all around us but nobody has been able to tap into it," the Daily Mail reports.

If a battery or a solar-collector or battery package failed completely, scavenged energy could allow the system to transmit a wireless distress signal while also maintaining critical functionalities, according to a Georgia Tech statement.

Tentzeris and his team have used inkjet printers to combine sensors, antennas and energy scavenging capabilities on paper or flexible polymers.

So far, the energy captured is minute - measured in microwatts and milliwatts, not megawatts - but is able to gather enough juice to power small sensors and RFID tags.

For example, the researchers last week said they had managed to gather enough energy from a TV station half a km away to power a small temperature sensor.

Sensation smartphone in India

Sensation smartphone in: HTC

Mobile handsets manufacturer HTC Corp Thursday launched its smartphone HTC Sensation in the Indian market and said it will launch its HTC Flyer tablets in a couple of weeks.

"HTC Sensation is an exceptional smartphone that will win customers with its unique blend of functionality, usability and style. It will create a paradigm shift in the overall smartphone category with a brilliant experience," said Lennard Hoornik, president for south Asia, HTC.

The smartphone is priced Rs.32,700.

"HTC Flyer will be launched shortly, in the next couple of weeks," he added.

The company emphasised that India was a big market for HTC but denied to divulge its sales target here.

"India is a huge market. We want to be a leading player here and we have high sales target here," added Hoornik.

Based on Android 2.3 platform, Sensation is HTC's first phone to feature a 1.2 GHz processor supplied by Qualcomm and HTC Sense 3.0 user interface.

The phone is also equipped with an eight megapixel camera with auto-focus and a 4.3 inch touchscreen.

Cloud computing powered by Intel chips

Cloud computing powered by Intel chips
World's largest chip maker Intel Corporation has developed microprocessors to power modular and scalable servers for cloud computing - that enables use of multiple servers as a single platform - by data centres and infrastructure management service providers, a senior official said Friday.

"As part of our second generation multi-core Xeon processors, we have designed and developed chips that can be used for servers by cloud computing providers and builders to offer high performance and energy efficient solutions to end-customers with security, scalable storage capacity," Intel marketing programme manager Nick Knupffer told reporters here.

As the next wave of technology revolution, cloud computing enables use of multiple servers as a single platform through a digital network (website) under secured environment with access to a range of applications and tools for reducing the cost of IT operations.

"Our Xeon processor-based servers can be deployed by data centres and enterprises offering infrastructure management services to end-customers across verticals, especially small and medium businesses (SMBs) which cannot afford to invest in capital intensive IT infrastructure and hire personnel to run it," Intel South Asia director R. Ravichandran said.
According to global market research and analysis firm IDC (International Data Corporation), an estimated 2.5 billion people with over 15 billion devices will access the internet by 2015. The same year, the internet traffic is expected to reach a zettabyte or one million, million billion bytes.

"Under our multi-year vision for cloud computing (Cloud 2015), cloud data centres will be seamlessly and securely connected and fully automated. The centres will also provide secure access and optimal experience across a range of devices from smartphones to powerful notebooks," Knupffer pointed out.

With about 70 per cent of chief information officers (CIOs) concerned about cloud security, Intel is working on providing trusted execution technology (TXT) to enhance security at the processor level by ensuring a server is not tampered with at the hypervisor level.

The $44-billion Intel acquired global security solutions provider McAfee in August 2010 for $7.7 billion to enhance security of its processors by embedding the features in the chips.

44 trillion watts of Earth’s heat

Some 44 trillion watts of heat continually flow from Earth's interior into space. Where does this come from?

One trillion is 1,000 billion. So 44 terawatts works out to 44,000 billion watts. And how did geologists come by the staggering figure? They relied on temperature measurements from more than 20,000 boreholes around the world.

Radioactive decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium in earth's crust and mantle is a principal source of this heat, reports the journal Nature Geoscience.

In 2005, scientists in the Japan-based KamLAND (Kamioka Liquid-scintillator Antineutrino Detector) collaboration first showed that there was a way to measure the contribution directly.

A neutrino, more similar to an electron, is an elementary particle that travels close to the speed of light, but unlike electrons, doesn't carry an electric charge, according to a statement by Berkeley Lab, which is a major contributor to KamLAND.

The trick was to catch what KamLAND dubbed geoneutrinos -- more precisely, geo-antineutrinos -- emitted when radioactive isotopes (same chemical element with different masses) decay.

"As a detector of geoneutrinos, KamLAND has distinct advantages," says Stuart Freedman, member of US Department of Energy's Berkeley Lab.

Freedman, also professor in physics at the University of California, Berkeley, said: "KamLAND was specifically designed to study antineutrinos. We are able to discriminate them from background noise and detect them with very high sensitivity."

One thing that's at least 97 per cent certain is that radioactive decay supplies only about half the earth's heat. Other sources - primordial heat left over from the planet's formation, and possibly others as well - must account for the rest.

Antineutrinos are produced not only in the decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium isotopes but in a variety of others, including fission products in nuclear power reactors.

Padmanabhaswamy Temple : Richest Temple in world

Padmanabhaswamy TempleSree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the most famous Lord Vishnu Temples in Kerala, South India. Also Padmanabhaswamy Temple is the Richest Temple in world, known as Sree Ananda Padmanabhaswamy Temple, this Mahavishnu Temple is located inside East Fort, in Thiruvananthapuram - the capital city of Kerala, India. Lord Vishnu is enshrined here in the Anananthasayanam posture (in eternal sleep of yognidra), lying on Sri Anantha, the hooded snake. According to traditions, Sree Padmanabhaswamy Kshetram is believed to have been worshipped by Chandra (Moon God) and Lord Indra (the head of the Devas).Significance of Sree Padmanabhaswamy TempleSree Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. Divya Desams are the holiest abodes of the Lord Mahavishnu that are mentioned in the works of the Tamil Azhvars (saints).

Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple (Malayalam: ശ്രീ പദ്മനാഭസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം, śṟī padmaṉābhasvāmi kṣētṟaṁ ?) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu located in Thiruvananthapuram, India. The shrine is currently run by a trust headed by the royal family of Travancore. The temple is one of 108 Divya Desams (Holy Abodes of Vishnu) – principal centres of worship of the deity in Vaishnavism. The temple, constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil literature canon of the Tamil Alvar saints (6th-9th centuries CE), with structural additions to it made throughout the 16th century CE, when its ornate Gopuram was constructed. The most recent renovations to the temple occurred in the 18th century CE. The temple features heavily in Akilam five series of the Akilathirattu Ammanai corpus, the holy text of the Ayyavazhi belief system. Services were provided to the local community with the temple's revenue. The temple gave its name to Kerala’s state capital Thiruvananthapuram. ‘Thiru’ ‘Anantha’ ‘Puram’ means Sacred Abode of Lord Anantha Padmanabha The principal deity, Padmanabhaswamy, is enshrined in the "Anantha-sayanam" posture (in the eternal sleep of Yoga-nidra on the serpent Ananta). The Travancore Kings regarded themselves as ‘Padmanabha-dasa’ (Servant of Lord Padmanabha).

Padmanabhaswamy Temple is the Richest Temple in world.
The temple and its assets belong to Lord Padmanabhaswamy, and are controlled by a trust run by the Royal family. The royals consider themselves Padmanabhadasas i.e. servants of Padmanabhaswamy.
There had been an earlier inventory of at least one vault on Sunday, December 6, 1931. A vault was opened in the presence of Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, then the Maharaja of the state of Travancore. Among the contents found were gold and silver coins stored in a "granary like thing," four brass chests of coins, over 300 gold pots, and a six-chambered wooden chest containing jewels decorated with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and other precious stones. Four coffers were removed and taken to the palace treasury for counting and valuation.
The Kerala High Court ordered the temple and its assets be managed by the State on January 31, 2011. As trustees of the temple, the royals have challenged the Kerala Govt.'s decision. The lower court's ruling was set aside by the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court directed utmost security in and around the temple and asked the Central Valuation Institute of Lucknow for an inventory valuation.
currently Padmanabhaswamy Temple : Richest Temple in world.
In June 2011, the Supreme Court directed the authorities from the fire services and archeology department to open the secret (sanctum sanctorum) chambers of the temple for inspection of the items kept inside. A detailed inventory of the temple assets, consisting of gold, jewels, and other valuables was made. Several 18th century Napoleonic era coins were found,as well as a three-and-a-half feet tall gold idol of Mahavishnu studded with rubies and emeralds, and ceremonial attire for adorning the deity in the form of 16-part gold anki weighing almost 30 kilograms (66 lb) together with gold coconut shells, one studded with rubies and emeralds.
This revelation has solidified the status of the Padmanabhaswamy temple as one of the wealthiest temples in India and with the final estimate of the wealth, it might overtake the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple—hitherto thought to be the wealthiest temple—having some 320 billion (US$7.14 billion) in gold, coins and other assets. It is estimated that the value of the monumental items is close to 1.2 trillion (US$26.76 billion), making it the richest temple in the world. If the antique value is taken into account, these assets could be worth ten times the current market price.

Currently Padmanabhaswamy Temple is richest shrine in world.
The valuables are thought to have been in the temple for hundreds of years, having been put there by traders, pilgrims and royals such as the maharajahs of Travancore, and by offerings of Travancore kings, other royals and ordinary devotees to the deity. While some Historians have suggested that a major chunk of the stored riches reached the kings in the form of tax, gifts, as well as conquered wealth of states and offerings stocked in the temple for safekeeping. A ferry transported traders, pilgrims and chroniclers across the Gulf of Mannar from the Tenavaram temple, the famously wealthy Vishnu-Shiva temple town emporium to the Chera kingdom via Puttalam of the Jaffna kingdom during the medieval period. This temple was destroyed in 1587 CE, a few years after the Thiruvananthapuram Padmanabhaswamy temple gopuram was constructed. Morrocan traveller Ibn Batuta visited Tenavaram in the 14th century and described the Vishnu idol here as being made of gold and the size of a man with two large rubies as eyes "that lit up like lanterns during the night."All people living within the vicinity of the temple and who visited it were fed with monetary endowments that were made to the idol.
The temple has 6 vaults (Kallaras), labeled as A to F for book keeping purpose by the Court. While vaults A and B have been unopened over the past 130 years, vaults C to F have been opened from time to time. The two priests of the temple, the 'Periya Nambi' and the 'Thekkedom Nambi', are the custodians of the four vaults, C to F, which are opened periodically. The Supreme Court had directed that "the existing practices, procedures and rituals" of the temple be followed while opening vaults C to F and using the articles inside. Vaults A and B shall be opened only for the purpose of making an inventory of the articles and then closed.
On July 4, 2011 the seven-member expert team which is taking stock of the assets at temple decided to postpone opening of the secret chamber marked 'B' till they obtained more expert opinion as preliminary examination of its gates had found the vault to be secured with iron shutters making experts wonder what lay inside. The royal family said that many legends were attached to the temple and that chamber B has a model of a snake on the main door and opening it could be a bad omen.Seven-member team will consult with some more experts on July 8, 2011 and a then they may take the final decision on opening of chamber ‘B’.
In late June 2011, a review of the temple's underground vaults was undertaken by a seven-member panel appointed by the Supreme Court of India to generate an inventory, leading to the enumeration of a vast collection of articles that are traditionally kept under lock and key. Unofficial estimates on the sixth day of the inventory placed the value of contents at close to 100,000 crore (US$22.3 billion), making it one of the wealthiest in the world, richer than the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh – by official records considered to be the richest shrine in India. The precious articles come from the donations that were made by the Royal family and traders, who used to come from other parts of the country and abroad, as offerings to the deity, and were sealed within the thick stone walls and vaults of the temple for over a millennium.
The final vault of the temple has not been opened, due to the belief that a curse befalls those who attempt to open it. Less than a month after the first of the secret vaults was opened, the chief petitioner for opening the vaults, T.P. Sundarrajan died after suffering from a sudden unexplained illness. This has been dubbed as "The Curse of the Cobra" by the media.
